A new look for the new year: regular readers may have noticed slight changes with the look of the blog. I changed themes after they came up with an update to the popular Misty Lake theme I was using. I’m quite pleased with the change and hope you enjoy the slightly larger and clearer text and brighter-looking images.

I also wanted to thank each and every one of you who visit my blog and enjoy the posts and share your experiences with me. Interacting with all of you is such a wonderful experience and I hope we can continue to enjoy the wonders of nature together.

Happy new year!

I got some unexpected mail today. Several months ago, I received an email from one of the editors of Canadian Geographic.  They were going through images from their photo club (where you submit images for their contests) looking for the best wildlife shots of the year. They asked me to submit a few hi-res shots.

I did and that was the end of it as far as I can remember. Then I received this today! I was flabbergasted to find one of my images in the magazine among a collection of some truly stunning shots.

I’m incredibly honoured to have been chosen as one of the best amateurs of the year and to be included with so many talented photographers.

If you are in Manitoba, I would like to invite you to come out to the Maple Grove Tea Room on River Road, just north of Winnipeg on Sunday, August 12 from 11-4 pm. I will be there selling art cards created using the images from this blog. Perfect for sharing with friends or family or for framing and enjoying on your own walls.

Two exciting announcements: 1) the first of a set of interpretive signage that I have been designing has been erected at the trailhead of the Crescent Creek Trail in Teulon, Manitoba, Canada. It’s so exciting to see it up and being enjoyed by the locals and visitors to the park. Five more signs, detailing the natural history of the area are almost finished and should be up by late summer. You can see the trailhead sign here.

In other news, I’m deeply honoured to announce that Second Nature has been shortlisted as a finalist in the Travel Manitoba Tourism Excellence Awards. Still won’t know the results until September, but it means a lot to be nominated at this level.

I’m proud to announce that my business, Second Nature, Adventures in Discovery was nominated for a Sustainable Tourism Award for this year’s Travel Manitoba Tourism Excellence Awards. I won’t hear one way or another until September, but it is such a honour to have been recognized by my peers in this industry only a year into this business.  I’ll be sure to keep you all posted.

If you’re in the Winnipeg, Manitoba area this month, come and join me at Fort Whyte Alive on Sunday, February 12th (which also happens to be Darwin’s birthday) at 1:00 pm to learn about the length critters all over the world will go to find that special someone in this educational and somewhat irreverent talk. It’s truly a case of Dr. Doolittle meets Dr. Ruth in this fun and fascinating talk. Hope to see you there!

Last night, the Interlake region of Manitoba celebrated their tourism stars at the Fisher River Cree Nation. It was a great event, filled with great food, friends and cultural experiences. I’m very proud to announce that after only 9 months in business, Second Nature won the Sustainable Tourism Award! Because sustainability is the cornerstone of my tourism experiences, it means so much to know that my colleagues in the industry think I’m going a good job!

Second Nature has been honoured with 3 nominations for Interlake Tourism Awards (www.interlaketourism.com). After only 8 months in business, we have been nominated for the Partnership, Product Development and Sustainable Tourism Awards. It’s a huge honour and I’m looking forward to celebrating this great Manitoba region with other nominees and local businesses at the Celebration of Stars this September.
